A while back, we reflected on the idea that we should not live this Christmas just like any other. We can say the same thing about Advent. The time of Advent reminds us not only of the past, celebrating and contemplating Jesus’ birth at Bethlehem, but also of His constant presence among us. It also reminds us that we must always be vigilant and that He will come again in glory.

    Garabandal, Spain. In this tiny Spanish village not far from the northern coast of Spain in the 1960s, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared on numerous occasions to four Spanish girls: Conchita González, her second cousin Jacinta González, and Mari Loli Mazón, all three then 12 years old (in 1961), and Mari Cruz González, then 11 (photo below; Mari Loli is now deceased)     Today I met with one of the four, Jacinta, now 74, whose name is now Jacinta González Moynihan; she married an Irish-American named Jeffrey Moynihan in the 1970s. (Jacinta is second from the right in the photos of the four girls below).     In the very center of the photo above are several dark green pine trees. The area is 20 minutes up a steep path from the village of Garabandal, known as "The Pines." The Virgin appeared to the girls near the pines, as well as in the village. The pines were planted in the 1920s, about 100 years ago, to commemorate the first communions of children in those years

In five joyful mysteries, the birth of Christ to the Virgin Mary is recalled; in five sorrowful mysteries, the passion and death of Christ is recalled; in five glorious mysteries, the resurrection of Christ, his triumph over death itself, is recalled.)     In the rosary, 10 Hail Marys are prayed with each mystery, totaling 150 Hail Marys for the 15 traditional mysteries; this is the same number as that of the Psalms of King David, which number 150. Three other Hail Marys are prayed at the beginning of each Rosary, for faith, hope and love. So the total of the Hail Marys is 153, which is the same number as the number of fish caught by the disciples in the Sea of Galilee after Christ's resurrection, when they had fished all night and caught nothing, but then cast their nets on the other side of their fishing boat, and caught 153 fish, which John says were poured out on the beach, and counted. Many Church Fathers later interpreted this number as symbolic of all the species of fish, but also symbolic of the number of all the nations in the world, which would be drawn into the nets of the evangelists by the preaching of the disciples in the centuries up until today.     ***     A century of the pine grove     Above the village of Garabandal, there is a grove of pine trees.     The tress were planted from seeds given to children making their first communions in the 1920s. So the trees are now 100 years old.     This is a place of profound peace.     It is said that a miracle will someday occur in this place, a miracle which will be visible to the entire world, which will leave a permanent sign until the end of time.         ***     The kiss of the Virgin     Each time the four girls of Garabandal saw the Virgin, and spoke with her, she spoke with them as a mother speaks to her children.     She was familiar, gentle, encouraging, loving.     And each time she left them, the children said, she kissed them, to show her love for them.     So, at the center of the Garabandal apparitions was the Virgin's maternal kiss.     The love of a mother for her children.         ***     I spoke briefly today with Jacinta, and with her husband, Jeffrey, who has my same name, Moynihan, and whose father was named Dr. Robert Moynihan.     She showed me a crucifix that she has kept for more than 60 years. She told me that the Virgin had kissed the crucifix when she had held it up to her.     She held out the crucifix to me, so that I too might kiss it.     In this way, the maternal kiss of the Virgin of Garabandal was shared also with me; in this letter, it is my hope that such a kiss may also be shared with each of you.

Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Belladream Films is producing an amazing movie titled "The Great Warning". But as with most projects given by Our Lord, He requires that we do our part to help in the mission. The movie is almost complete despite not having the needed funds in place and is scheduled to likely be available to the public by October of this year. But Belladream Films is in desperate need of additional funds by August 31, 2023 to complete the project.

The total cost for the movie is $1.3 million dollars, most of which they had received through donations from around the world, but they are still short $253,000. This film will be an amazing tool we can use to show and inform as many people as possible about the Warning before it occurs, but only if it can be completed.

Waiting in Hope When Prophesied Events Are Seemingly Delayed

An often-overlooked but timely scene from the Book of Revelation relates how the souls of those righteous persons martyred during the Great Tribulation will, from beneath the altar of God, cry out, asking when their blood would be avenged through the exercise of Divine Judgment. The passage tells us that in response, “Each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to be patient a little while longer until the number was filled of their fellow servants and brothers who were going to be killed as they had been” (6:11). This cry for justice and vindication, along with the common human tendency toward impatience, echoes an important Old Testament theme.

In Psalm 13, for instance, the biblical author laments, “How long, O Lord? Will You utterly forget me? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long shall I harbor sorrow in my soul, grief in my heart day after day? How long will my enemies triumph over me? Look, answer me, O Lord, my God!” (verses 2-4). Similar heartfelt cries are found in Psalm 74:10-11 (a prayer in time of national calamity), Psalm 94:3-4, and in Psalm 69:3, in which the psalmist complains, “I am wearied with calling, my throat is parched; my eyes have failed with looking for my God.” Furthermore, the prophet Jeremiah states with dismay, “We wait for peace to no avail; for a time of healing, but terror comes instead” (8:15). Other such appeals for divine assistance are found in the Books of Daniel (9:19), Isaiah (33:2), Lamentations (5:20), and elsewhere.

Those faithful Catholics today who are aware of the “signs of the times” can easily understand—and perhaps identify with—these biblical expressions of confusion and doubt over the apparent delay in the fulfillment of many prophecies supposedly given about our own age. We know, based on the words of numerous alleged visionaries and other heavenly messengers, along with the evidence we see with our own eyes, that this world is seriously disordered—indeed, in a state of rebellion against Almighty God—and that the current state of affairs cannot go on indefinitely. We’ve heard or read about a coming time of societal unrest and disruption, with various chastisements or punishments for humanity’s sins, including natural disasters, the possibility of economic collapse, famine, martial law, war, political repression, and the eventual need for the True Church to go underground during a time of schism and religious persecution. Beyond that, we’re waiting for the events prophesied at Garabandal and elsewhere: the Warning, the Miracle, and the Great Chastisement (in whatever form it may take), finally followed by the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the arrival of the Era of Peace.

Some of us have been expecting and preparing for these events for many years now, and we can’t help but wonder: why are they delayed? Are the prophecies foretelling them false or mistaken, or has something happened to invalidate them? Is a still-unrecognized spiritual renewal finally underway in response to these heavenly warnings, negating the urgency of Divine Judgment? Is the moral condition of the world actually improving? Few would argue this to be the case—but we’re then left with the question of why nothing seems to be happening.

Catholics who try to warn their loved ones of the need to repent before judgment arrives often end up looking foolish or being considered fanatical alarmists; priests who try to prepare their people for what’s coming (often at the risk of being rebuked, disciplined, or otherwise restricted by their bishops) may succeed only in undermining their own credibility and authority; authentic visionaries and locutionists receiving dire heavenly warnings may find themselves sharing the frustrations of the much- maligned prophet Jeremiah (20:7-10), whose messages were largely rejected by his contemporaries.

In their efforts to know and do the will of God, some people have in effect put their lives on hold, passing up opportunities for new homes or jobs, forgoing vacations and other family activities, and making their experience of life less enjoyable and more difficult than would otherwise have been the case. Those who’ve made what they thought were prudent material preparations—such as storing emergency food, water, and other supplies (including Mass kits and other religious articles) and perhaps even purchasing property in remote areas as possible places of refuge—may be tempted to wonder if their efforts and investment will prove to be unnecessary or wasted.

Why is there an apparent delay in all that’s been prophesied? How long will this delay continue, and how are we supposed to respond to it?

Chronos versus Kairos

The ancient Greek language—the language in which much of the New Testament was written—had two different words for time. Chronos refers to measurable time: days, weeks, months, and years; it’s the origin of our words chronology and chronicles, meaning an orderly (and sometimes predictable) timeline. A parent who says, “My son will be graduating from high school a year from this spring” is using chronos.

Kairos is something different; it means “the appointed time” or “the proper moment.” This type of time is measured not by the calendar, but by the completion or fulfillment of certain conditions or events. If a child asks “When can I get my own smartphone like all my friends?”, the parent who responds “When you’re ready” (i.e., “When I think you’re mature enough,” or “When I think you’ve earned it or can be trusted with it”) is using kairos. The arrival of this moment cannot be easily predicted; it’s almost something of a “moving target” contingent on other events or conditions that may or may not occur.

Most biblical prophecy is rooted in kairos, as is most private revelation. (Indeed, while the Church is prudent or cautious about all alleged heavenly messages, it especially tends to view with suspicion those prophecies giving specific dates when events will supposedly take place). The problem in making sense of what is and isn’t happening in the world is that we human beings tend to think in terms of chronos; as the years pass without any major or dramatic changes to our world and to our lives, we wonder about the “delay”— while from Heaven’s viewpoint, God’s plan of salvation continues unfolding, and the prophesied events are on schedule.

Biblical Insights on God’s Timing

This is the context for understanding several important scriptural passages on the necessity of waiting for the unfolding of the divine plan. For instance, the Lord addressed the prophet Ezekiel:

Son of man, what is this proverb that you have in the land of Israel:

“The days drag on, and no vision ever comes to anything?” Say to them therefore: Thus says the Lord God: I will put an end to this proverb; they shall never quote it again in Israel. Rather, say to them:

The days are at hand, and also the fulfillment of every vision. Whatever I speak is final, and it shall be done without further delay . . . . Son of man, listen to the house of Israel saying, “The vision he sees is a long way off; he prophesies of the distant future!” Say to them therefore: Thus says the Lord God: None of My words shall be delayed any longer; whatever I speak is final, and it shall be done . . . (12:21-25, 28).

A similar message on divine timing was given to the prophet Habakkuk, who was told by the Lord, “Write down the vision clearly upon the tablets, so that one can read it readily. For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint; if it delays, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not be late” (2:2-3).

This description of a reliable heavenly timetable is further developed in the New Testament; in particular, the 2nd Letter of St . Peter instructs us, Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like one day . The Lord does not delay His promise, as some regard “delay,” but He is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (3:8-9).

Thus, we see that divine “patience” is ordered to salvation: God wants to give sinners every possible chance to repent before they experience the fullness of His justice.

Scripture asserts that after a time set aside for repentance, the Lord will indeed overthrow all wickedness and vindicate those who remained faithful to Him. As we’re told, “See, the day of the Lord! See, the end is coming! Lawlessness is in full bloom, insolence flourishes, violence has risen to support wickedness. It [God’s intervention] shall not be long in coming, nor shall it delay” (Ezek . 7:10-11) . This idea is echoed in the New Testament Letter to the Hebrews:

Do not throw away your confidence; it will have great recompense. You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what He has promised. For, after just a brief moment, He Who is to come shall come; He shall not delay. But My just one shall live by faith, and if he draws back I take no pleasure in him. We are not among those who draw back and perish, but among those who have faith and will possess life (10:35-39).

If faith is “evidence of things not seen” (Heb . 11:1), choosing to continue trusting in God’s promises, even when their fulfillment seems distant and uncertain, is surely very pleasing to the Lord.

Garabandal: Is 2023 the Year?

Since the death of Benedict XVI, some people are of the opinion that the prophecies of Garabandal are close to fulfillment. The prophecies refer to a Warning, a Miracle and a possible Chastisement on a global scale (for a summary of the content of the prophecies and an objective assessment of the reliability of the apparitions, see here).
The statement by Conchita that the Miracle would occur on a Thursday in April that coincides with the feast of a male martyr of the Eucharist has caused many people to surmise that the date of the Miracle will be April 13 this year (which falls on a Thursday). Hermengild, a Spanish saint, was beheaded by order of the king on April 13, 585, for refusing to accept the Eucharist from a heretical Arian bishop.
Could 2023 be the year? The visionaries made a number of statements about world events that would coincide with the Warning and the Miracle. Even though certain of these statements seemed extremely implausible a few years ago, in our days they appear to be coming true in striking ways. As such, these events may constitute a “pre-warning” for the Warning itself and the subsequent Miracle.
First pre-warning of the Warning – the Synod on Synodality
Our Lady told Conchita that the prophecies would come to pass at a time when an important synod was being held in the Church. Over the years, many people have been perplexed by this prophecy. Since 1965, the synod of bishops established by Pope Paul VI has met every few years. Seeing that synods have become so commonplace, people wondered how one of these gatherings could be so different that our Lady would use it as a marker to point to the Warning. Evidently, Our Lady could not have been referring to one of these regular gatherings of the synod, but to something more exceptional or unique. What could that be? Suddenly, lo and behold, in these very days, we find ourselves in the midst of a synod of extraordinary character. The Synod on Synodality is the first time that the synod has had a worldwide dimension, with a level of consultation and dialogue never seen before in the history of the Church. The process is already ongoing and will come to an end in the Fall of 2024. Since 1965, there has been no other more likely candidate for the “important synod” that – in the words of Mother Nieves Garcia – would constitute a “pre-Warning” for the major events foretold in Garabandal.
Second pre-warning – the death of Benedict XVI
On June 3, 1963, as Conchita made her way to the church to pray for Pope John XXIII who had just died, she heard the voice of Our Lady said, “After this pope, there are only three left. Then it will be the end of times.” Soon after, the Virgin Mary specified to Conchita that there would also be a fourth pope who would “govern the Church for a very short time”. This last prediction is remarkable because it was fulfilled in the short papacy of John Paul I, thus supporting the reliability of the rest of the prophecy of the popes from Our Lady. In fact, the short pontificate of John Paul I can be taken as a sign that the first affirmation of Our Lady is also true: that after the last pope in the series (Benedict XVI), the end of times will begin.
Regarding the meaning of “end of times”, Fr. José Luis Saavedra remarks that we have no reason to think that there will be no more popes after this time. Rather, the Church will enter the decisive period of her history in which the Immaculate Heart of Mary will triumph, as foretold at Fatima.
As long as Benedict XVI was alive, we could suppose that the fulfillment of the prophecies still remained at some point in the future. The end times would begin after he was gone. While he was still with us, we could safely assume that the events were some time away. To some people, his death on the very last day of 2022 has taken on an ominous significance. Conchita had heard, “After this pope, then it will be the end of times.” Does Benedict’s demise on the last day of 2022 mean that the “end of times” will begin in 2023? As with prophecies of this sort in general, we have no way of knowing the exact meaning of the words that are used. “Then” might allow for a period of months, or perhaps more than a year, before the events begin. The death of Benedict XVI, however, means that one of the most decisive markers regarding the date of the Warning has already been passed.
Third pre-warning – World Tribulation
The visionaries have stated that the events would occur after a period of world tribulation. Mari-Loli reported that Our Lady had revealed to her that the Warning would occur at a time when “Russia will suddenly and unexpectedly overrun a great part of the free world”. After the fall of the USSR in 1991, many people thought that such a prediction had become farfetched. The sudden invasion of Ukraine last year, as well as threats to other parts of Europe, have brought this prediction to unexpected fulfillment.
In a number of statements, the girls describe the tribulation as involving the “return” of communism. In the 1960s, there was no sign of communism going away anytime soon. In fact, at that point, it was attaining its greatest level of global influence. Thus, the prediction of the girls constitutes in a sense a two-fold prophecy: firstly, that communism will first go away, and, secondly, that it will return. From our point of view in 2023, this makes perfect sense. The collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s marked the demise of the global leader of communism, the entity that had spread its errors throughout the entire world. This marked a huge blow to the fortunes of global Marxism. However, in the intervening decades, cultural Marxism has made huge inroads into Western society. This is manifested especially by critical race theory, gender ideology and radical feminism. Countries like Ireland have rejected the moral principles of the Bible that were once enshrined in their Christian heritage. In their place, they have wholeheartedly embraced the worldview of cultural Marxism and enacted it in their laws. In a sense, then, it is accurate to say that communism went away to some extent, but has now returned to global prominence in the guise of neo-Marxism.
Other pre-warnings
Other statements by the visionaries include the claim that something would happen before the Warning to cause many people to lose faith in the authenticity of the apparitions at Garabandal. Such an event has already come to pass. On June 18, 2014, the great apostle of Garabandal, Joey Lomagino, died. Even though the day of his death was providentially the exact anniversary of the first apparition in Garabandal in 1961, the fact that he died before the Miracle caused many people to lose faith in the apparitions (for more details on this question, and for possible answers to skeptics, see here).
Other indications that the events are at hand include the prediction by the visionaries that they would occur when churches would be attacked and closed, and the faithful would be prevented from receiving the sacraments. This is something that happened for the first time in history on a global level because of the pandemic. The number of attacks on churches in Western countries such as France and the U.S. has been increasing exponentially in recent years.
Other considerations
Other considerations make people think that the events are still some time in the future. Mari-Loli is reported to have said that the Warning will take place in a year that is an even number, ruling out 2023. In addition, German author, Albrecht Weber, quoted Conchita as saying that the Pope will go to Moscow, and when he returns to the Vatican, hostilities will break out in different parts of Europe as a prelude to the Warning. Given that Pope Francis has not yet traveled to Moscow, the prophesied events may still be some way in the future.
Sometimes, however, in response to human free will, prophecies do not unfold as originally formulated. In December 2021, Pope Francis announced that he intended to visit Moscow in the near future. Preliminary talks to advance that visit were held in the Vatican at the end of 2021 with Bishop Hilarion, the head of the Russian church’s department for external relations. Then, in February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. Since then, repeated attempts by the Vatican to resurrect the idea of a papal visit to Moscow have run aground. Could the visionaries’ prophecy regarding Russia’s invasion of parts of Europe after a papal visit be already fulfilled by the fact that Pope Francis was single-mindedly determined to visit Moscow before the onset of hostilities in February 2022? That visit would surely have taken place but for the fact that Patriarch Kirill opposed it. Sometimes the outcome of genuine prophecies is indeed foiled or modified by human free will.
Why these prophecies and why this speculation?
Many people who were once firm adherents to the apparitions in Garabandal have lost faith in recent decades. The delay in the occurrence of the events, the death of Joey Lomangino, and the endless speculation about the date of the Miracle have led to doubt and frustration. Why did Our Lady give so many “clues” about when the events would occur? Or were Conchita and Mari-Loli simply indiscreet when they “spilled the beans” about these details? Has the endless speculation about dates damaged Garabandal?
Perhaps, though, there is a very definite heavenly plan behind these tantalizing shreds of evidence. We can be sure that Conchita and Mari-Loli were being obedient instruments of Our Lady in allowing these clues to emerge. The death of Benedict XVI, the ongoing extraordinary synod, the return of communism, the unprecedented hostility to the faith in the West, the warmongering of Russia, the return of communism in the guise of neo-Marxism – all these show clearly that the time of the events is upon us. The remarkable lining up of those very things predicted by the visionaries seemed far-fetched just a few years ago. Whether the events occur in 2023, 2024 or in the coming years, we can be confident that our time of preparation is now relatively short. This gives us precious motivation to prepare for the Warning with the very tools that have been central to the message of Garabandal since the 1960s: increased personal prayer, Eucharistic devotion and recourse to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
